Who the Medical Practitioners Award covers

The Medical Practitioners Award covers medical practitioners and their employers.

Medical practitioners means a person who is employed as a medical practitioner in:

  • hospitals
  • hospices
  • benevolent homes
  • day procedure centres
  • aboriginal health services
  • community health centres
  • the Red Cross Blood Service
  • the South Australian Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science
  • the Victorian Cytology Service
  • the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine.

Examples of employees covered by the Medical Practitioners Award include:

  • interns
  • resident medical practitioners
  • registrars
  • senior registrars
  • career medical practitioners
  • senior career medical practitioners
  • community medical practitioners
  • specialists
  • senior specialists
  • principal specialists
  • senior principal specialists
  • deputy director of medical services
  • director of medical services
  • general practitioners who work at a day procedure centre.

The Medical Practitioners Award also covers labour hire businesses that employ medical practitioners.

Who the Medical Practitioners Award doesn't cover

The following employees are not covered by the Medical Practitioners Award:

  • general practitioners who work in private practices
  • clerical and administrative workers including medical receptionists
  • health professionals who work in the health industry (such as occupational therapists and physiotherapists)
  • nurses.
