Employees that work alone in the Retail Award

Employees that work alone aren’t always classified at Level 3 in the Retail Award.

An employee’s classification depends on all of their duties, not just whether they work alone.

Their classification also depends on the main reason why they were employed.

If an employee that works alone was mainly employed to be a shop assistant, they will be a Level 1.

Some duties that indicate an employee is a Level 3 include:

  • opening and closing the premises
  • responsibility for the security of cash (which is more than using the cash register)
  • responsibility for the security and general running of the shop.

Example

Jim works at Open All Hours convenience store.

Jim’s duties include serving customers, using a cash register, cash handling and loss prevention. Jim isn’t responsible for the security of cash.

Jim works alone.

The main purpose of Jim’s job is to be a shop assistant. This means that Jim is classified as a Level 1, even though he works alone.
