Calculating overtime pay in the Vehicle Award

Overtime pay is calculated separately for each shift that overtime is worked.

Example: Overtime on more than one shift

Georgina is a part-time employee.

This week Georgina worked 2 hours of overtime on Tuesday and 4 hours of overtime on Friday.

Georgina’s employer pays her for 2 hours at 150% of her minimum hourly rate for the overtime worked on Tuesday.

The overtime worked on Friday is calculated separately. She’s paid for 3 hours at 150% of her minimum hourly rate and 1 hour at 200% of her minimum hourly rate.

What happens if a shift goes past midnight?

The overtime period continues even if the shift goes past midnight.

Example: Overtime continues past midnight

Anthony is a full time employee.

This week Anthony worked overtime from 10pm Tuesday to 2am Wednesday.

Anthony’s employer pays him for 3 hours at 150% of his minimum hourly rate for the overtime worked from 10pm on Tuesday to 1am on Wednesday and 1 hour at 200% of his minimum hourly rate for the rest of his overtime.

Overtime rates for casual driveway attendants console operators or roadhouse attendants are set out in the award.
