What continuous shiftworkers get paid on Sunday shifts depends on:
- when they work the majority of the shift
- what day the shift starts on.
More than half of the shift on Sunday
They get paid 200% of the ordinary hourly rate for the whole shift.
Less than half of the shift on Sunday
They get paid their usual shift penalty rates for the whole shift, when less than half of the shift is on Sunday and the rest is on Monday.
The usual shift penalty rates are:
- 115% of the ordinary hourly rate for a rotating shiftworker
- 130% of the ordinary hourly rate for a permanent nightshift worker.
If Monday is a public holiday, the shiftworker gets public holiday penalty rates for the whole shift.
What if the shift starts on Saturday and goes into Sunday?
They get paid 200% of the ordinary hourly rate for the whole shift.
What if half the shift is on Sunday and half is on Monday?
They get paid 200% of the ordinary hourly rate for the Sunday hours and the normal shift penalty rate for the Monday hours.
Do casuals get paid the same penalty rates as other shiftworkers on Sundays?
Yes but the shift penalty rate is calculated on the casual ordinary hourly rate. This includes the casual loading.
Vehicle manufacturing employees
Vehicle manufacturing shiftworkers get paid 200% of the ordinary hourly rate for shifts:
- worked entirely on Sundays
- starting before midnight on a Saturday and extending into Sunday
- starting before 10.45pm on a Sunday and extending into a Monday.
Do casuals get paid the same penalty rates as other shiftworkers on Sundays?
Yes, but the shift penalty rate is calculated on the casual ordinary hourly rate. This includes the casual loading.
Manufacturing Award - clause 11.2 defines the casual ordinary hourly rate.
