Award coverage for attendant carers employed in private homes
Some people with disabilities directly employ carers to work in their homes, to provide them with assistance in their daily activities.
These carers are covered by the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Award.
This is the case if the employer:
- receives government funding to employ the carer, or
- uses their own funds to employ the carer.
Does the carer need to be employed by an individual?
No. The carer can be employed by an individual or through a business.
Example
John is the director of Sprockets Pty Ltd, a manufacturing business. John has a disability and needs a carer to assist him at home.
Sprockets Pty Ltd employs Ashley to work as John’s carer. Ashley is covered by the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Award, even though Sprockets Pty Ltd is a manufacturer.
What classification applies?
The employee’s classification will depend on the duties they carry out. Most attendant carers will be classified as a Home care employee level 1 or level 2.
Typical duties include assisting someone with:
- personal care and hygiene
- meal preparation and feeding
- basic housework
- participating in recreational activities
- transport and transfers.
