Split shift allowance in the Restaurant Award

What is a split shift?

An employee works a split shift when their work day is broken into separate work periods and the break between the work periods is more than 60 minutes.

When is the split shift allowance paid?

Full-time and part-time employees get the split shift allowance for each work period that’s 2 hours or longer.

To find out the amount of the split shift allowance, use our Pay and Conditions Tool.

Example

Roni is a part-time employee. On Monday, she’s rostered to work:

  • 8:30am to 12:30pm
  • 3:30pm to 6pm.

Roni is working a split shift because the break between the work periods is more than 60 minutes.

Each work period is more than 2 hours so she’ll get the split shift allowance for each work period.
