Daily hire and weekly hire

Employees can be hired as daily or weekly hire employees in the building and construction and plumbing industries.

Daily hire employees

Before employment begins, employers have to tell employees in writing what they're employed as. This can be daily hire, weekly hire (full-time or part-time) or casual.

Daily hire employees are similar to full-time and part-time employees. They still get entitlements such as annual leave and sick leave.

Daily hire employees have the following entitlements:

  • they are entitled to get or give 1 days notice to end their employment
  • a tradesperson will be allowed 1 hour before termination to collect, clean, sharpen and transport their tools
  • they receive a follow the job loading.

The follow the job loading is part of their hourly pay rate. It compensates for time that they aren't working between jobs.

Daily hire employees can work full-time or part-time hours.

Building and construction

Under the Building and Construction Award, only certain employees can be hired as daily hire employees. These are:

  • tradespersons
  • labourers.

Plumbing

Under the Plumbing Award, only employees under a plumbing and mechanical classification can be hired as daily hire employees.

Apprentices under either award can’t be employed on a daily hire or casual basis.

Weekly hire employees

Weekly hire employees can be full-time or part-time employees, and include apprentices. They have the same entitlements as other employees.

Full-time weekly hire employees work an average of 38 hours per week.

Part-time weekly hire employees work less than an average of 38 hours per week and have regular hours of work.

Plumbing

Under the Plumbing Award, apprentices have to be employed as a full-time weekly hire employee.
