Who the Higher Education General Staff Award covers
The Higher Education General Staff Award covers employers in the higher education industry, University Unions, and Student Unions, and their general staff employees who fit within the classifications of the award.
The higher education industry means educational institutions (eg. universities):
- providing undergraduate and postgraduate teachings leading to accredited degrees,
- performing research to support and inform curriculum.
University Unions and Student Unions means associations of students (or of students and others) set up primarily or exclusively to provide representation or services to students.
Examples of employees covered by the Higher Education General Staff Award includes:
- cleaners
- clerical and administrative workers
- security officers
- technical officers and assistants
- graduates and professionals such as computer systems officers
- librarians
- line managers
- technical supervisors
- research assistants
- professional or scientific officers
- faculty administrators
- researchers.
The Higher Education Industry General Staff Award also covers labour hire businesses and their general staff employees who are placed with an organisation in the higher education industry, or in a University or Student Union.

Who the Higher Education General Staff Award doesn’t cover
The following employers and employees are not covered by the Higher Education Industry General Staff Award:
- academic staff
- employees who mainly teach ELICOS, TESOL or other English language courses
- employees who mainly work in theatrical venues used predominantly for commercial purposes or production companies
- employees who mainly teach TAFE subjects.
