Who the Nursery Award covers
The Nursery Award covers employers in the nursery industry and their employees who fit within the classifications of the award.
The nursery industry includes:
- propagating
- planting
- growing
- cultivating
- maintaining
- selling
- distributing
- treating
plant material and associated nursery products in plant nurseries; flower, turf and tree farms or similar businesses.
It covers production and modification of growing media and clearing, treating or preparing land for the work listed above. It also covers processing, grading, packing or storing of plant material and associated products as part of a nursery.
The nursery industry also includes despatching and distribution of plant material and associated products if it is connected with any of the work listed above.
Examples of employees covered by the Nursery Award include:
- qualified and unqualified gardeners
- labourers
- sales assistants
- forklift operators
- drivers
- nursery managers
- senior or head growers
- propagators
- administrative workers.
The Nursery Award also covers labour hire businesses and their employees who are placed with an organisation in the nursery industry.

Who the Nursery Award doesn’t cover
The following employers and employees are not covered by the Nursery Award:
- general retail
- silviculture and afforestation
- employers and employees in the wine industry
- sugar farming or sugar cane growing and related activities
- gardening and landscaping businesses
- horticulture (fruit and vegetable growing) businesses.
