Who the Telecommunications Award covers

The Telecommunications Award covers employers engaged in the telecommunications services industry and their employees who fit within the classifications of the award.

Telecommunications services means any business which:

  • is mainly a telecommunications service carrier
  • is mainly a carriage service provider or a content service provider
  • mainly supplies telecommunications services (including value added telecommunications services)
  • has a main function that’s incidental to the businesses above.

Telecommunications service carrier means a business that has a carrier licence.

Examples of employees and employers covered by the Telecommunications Award include:

  • customer contact officer
  • principal customer contact specialist
  • customer contact team leader
  • principal customer contact leader
  • telecommunications technical employee
  • telecommunications technician
  • advanced telecommunications technician
  • principal telecommunications technician
  • telecommunications associate
  • clerical and administrative employees.

The Telecommunications Award also covers labour hire businesses and their employees who are placed with an organisation within the telecommunications services industry.

Who the Telecommunications Award doesn’t cover

The following employers and employees are not covered by the Telecommunications Award:

  • tv stations
  • radio stations
  • electrical contractors and their employees
  • customer contact technical employees
  • businesses that mainly manufacture and supply telecommunications equipment and lines (whether or not they also install and monitor telecommunications equipment and lines)
  • businesses that mainly install, service and/or maintain telecommunications equipment and lines (unless they also operate it).

The Telecommunications Award doesn’t cover employers and employees when they are covered by the Electrical Award.
