Who the Fitness Award covers

The Fitness Award covers employers in the fitness industry and their employees who fit within the classifications of the award.

The fitness industry means operating or providing:

  • fitness centres
  • fitness services or classes
  • group fitness organisations
  • weight loss/control centres
  • aquatic centres
  • aquatic services or classes
  • indoor sports centres
  • golf driving ranges
  • dance centres
  • martial arts centres
  • recreational camps
  • tennis clubs and centres
  • tennis coaching or classes
  • gymnastics services, activities or classes
  • outdoor education programs and school camps (that aren't run by a school or child care centre). 

Examples of employees covered by the Fitness Award include:

  • receptionists
  • swim coaches
  • tennis coaches
  • gymnastics coaches
  • lifeguards
  • fitness class teachers
  • personal trainers.

The Fitness Award also covers labour hire businesses and their employees who are placed with an organisation in the fitness industry.

Who the Fitness Award doesn't cover

The following are examples of employees who are not covered by the Fitness Award

  • administrative and support workers employed away from the centre
  • child minder employed by a fitness centre
  • sporting organisations governed by National, State or Territory bodies (for example Tennis Australia).

The Fitness Award doesn't cover employers and employees when they are covered by one of the following awards:

  • Amusement Award
  • Children's Services Award
  • Cleaning Award
  • Hospitality Award
  • Local Government Award
  • Registered Clubs Award
  • Security Award.
