Award coverage for employees of a computer sales &/or service business

Retail industry

A business is covered by the Retail Award if:

  • the main purpose of the business is to sell computers, or
  • it provides repair services from a retail premises with an attached workshop.

The Retail Award has classifications for employees working as shop assistants or performing minor repairs in the shop.

Employees performing more complex repairs in the workshop are covered by the Manufacturing Award. The classification will depend on the employee’s level of skill, experience and training.

Example

Rick runs a computer repair business which is located in a business park. It has a shop with an attached workshop, and its customers are both individuals and businesses. Rick has 2 employees, Jimmy and Bess.

Jimmy works in the shop, serving customers and doing minor repairs like replacing laptop keys. He’s covered by the Retail Award.

Bess works in the workshop, installing hardware and doing more complex repairs. She’s covered by the Manufacturing Award.

Electrical industry

A business is covered by the Electrical Award if:

  • it’s an electrical contracting business
  • the main purpose of the business is to install, service and/or repair cabling and computers.

The Electrical Award has a classification for qualified technicians.

Business equipment industry

A business is covered by the Business Equipment Award if:

  • it sells and leases computers and related equipment to other businesses
  • it installs and services the equipment it sells and leases.

This means that unless the business sells or leases the equipment it services or repairs, it can't be covered by the Business Equipment Award.

The Business Equipment Award has classifications for employees working as qualified technicians or commercial travellers.

A commercial traveller sells goods by visiting customers and doesn’t work in a shop.
