Casual pay in the Hair & Beauty Award

Casuals get paid different pay rates depending on when they work.

Monday to Friday work

Casuals get paid their ordinary hourly rate plus a 25% casual loading for hours worked between 7am to 9pm.

Work outside ordinary hours

Between Monday and Friday casuals get paid 150% of the ordinary hourly rate for hours worked between 9pm to 7am.

On Saturdays casuals get paid 150% of the ordinary rate for hours worked before 7am and after 6pm.

They don’t get paid the 25% casual loading for these hours.

Saturday and Sunday work

Penalty rates are increasing between 3 November 2021 – 31 December 2023 for hours worked between 7am and 6pm on Saturday and all day on a Sunday.

The penalty rates for work on a Saturday between 7am and 6pm are:

Example

Aaron is a casual Level 3 hairdresser.

He worked between 9.00am and 5.00pm on a Saturday in June 2022.

Aaron was paid 143% of the ordinary hourly rate for the hours he worked.

Before 3 November 2021 casuals were paid 133% of the ordinary hourly rate between these hours.

The penalty rates for all hours worked on a Sunday are:

Before 3 November 2021 casuals were paid 200% of their ordinary hourly rate on a Sunday.

These penalty rates for casuals include the casual loading.

Public holiday work

Casuals get paid 250% of the ordinary hourly rate for all hours worked.

Casuals don’t get paid the 25% casual loading on a public holiday.

Overtime

Casuals get overtime when they work:

  • more than 38 ordinary hours per week, or more than 38 hours per week averaged over a roster cycle
  • more than 10.5 hours per day.

They get paid:

  • 175% of the ordinary hourly rate for the first 3 hours
  • 225% of the ordinary hourly rate after 3 hours.

The overtime rates for casuals include the 25% casual loading.

Before the first full pay period starting on or after 1 January 2018, casuals didn’t get overtime pay.
